Betzabé H. Turner

Biographical Statement

Betzabé H. Turner serves as a licensed medical and Cross-Cultural Communications trainer, certified court interpreter, and certified healthcare interpreter and translator.  She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration/management with a minor in human resources from Sacred Heart University in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude.

As an instructor, she has the knowledge, skills and attitude needed to work effectively in cross-cultural settings.  Her work also includes curriculum development for educator continuing education and certification courses for school districts.  She keeps abreast of new developments in adult pedagogy, classroom management, techniques in interpreting pedagogy and the field of healthcare interpreting (e.g., Code of Ethics revisions, Standards of Practice revisions, legislative changes, and national certification.)

Her translation clientele spans from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to national labor unions, to PBS Station WETA.

She was born and raised in Lima, Peru, where she attended bilingual schools from kindergarten through high school.  She has over 30 years of experience working in the corporate sector for multinational companies such as Remington and Shell Oil Company, and most recently as a human resources executive for AT&T and NCR Corporation in San Juan, Puerto Rico.  Since moving in 2002 from Madrid, Spain, to Ashland, Oregon, her leadership portfolio includes holding the presidency of the Amigo Club, a sister-city civic organization, where she led the formation of a scholarship fund for exchange students between Southern Oregon University and the University of Guanajuato, Mexico, the sister city of Ashland, Ore.

Kernan R. Turner

Biographical Statement

Kernan R. Turner, editor, writer, and translator, is a journalism graduate of the University of Oregon. He spent more than 30 years with The Associated Press, including 27 years as a foreign correspondent and bureau chief in Mexico and Central America, South America, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, and the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal). He was last stationed in Madrid. Previous employment includes forest-fire lookout, reporter for the Coos Bay World, managing editor of the Albany (Ore.) Democrat-Herald. Turner spent a year in Costa Rica on an Inter-American Publishers Association (IAPA) scholarship.

Betzabé and Kernan live in Ashland, Oregon, home of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Ashland, a historic crossroad town on the pioneer Applegate Trail a few miles north of the California border, nestles in the hills above the Bear Creek Valley, a tributary of the Rogue River.
